Legacy Moment #3

The story of Rock Hall, Barbados’ first free Village – Directed by Margaret Hope and Peter Roy Byer. Narrated by George Lamming. YouTube channel: Achebe Bajan

Featured in this clip is Mrs. Ada “Ma Ben” Marshall, one of Rock Hall’s treasured elders, whose memory carried some of the village’s earliest origin stories. Joining her in this 1970s Freedom Is documentary segment are Professor Woodville Marshall (with the glasses) and Mr. Ronnie Hughes, whose research helped illuminate Rock Hall’s place in Barbadian history.

The alley shown — leading onto Fire Hill — is the same path that today faces the shops of Rock Hall Freedom Park, linking past and present in one continuous line of memory.

To explore more about Rock Hall’s journey and the legacy shaped by the two men featured here, read Rock Hall: A Journey Through One of Barbados’ First Free Villages on Eutelle Magazine.
