A Legacy Moment

We’ve dropped into a memorable part of our interview with Mr. Kenmore Spencer, who will be featured in Eutelle Magazine on November 18, 2025.
Here, he recalls the Rock Hall of his youth — a place rich with institutions and pride — and reflects on what it means to have the Freedom Park standing today as a lasting tribute to the island’s first free village. This monument’s story and vision are explored further in Laying the Foundation,” written by Aja, published on November 7, 2025.

[…] I’ve been gone for 36 years, and so some of the younger generation, I am now getting to know, but I always tell them, you know, we are so blessed because growing up, I always thought of Rock Hall as the capital of St. Thomas, yes, because we had everything. We had the police station, we had the post office, we had the district hospital, we had the rectory. I mean, everything was in Rock Hall. And so, for me, Rock Hall was always the capital of St. Thomas. And since the government so graciously built this, I always tell the guys, we are so fortunate because there are a lot of people in this country who wish they had something like this. And so, to be the first free village and to have something to commemorate it is awesome.
